Speed is simply a matter of money, How fast you go
depends on your budget. Luckily prices are coming down. The prices mentioned here may be out
of date by the time you read this, but this will give you some idea. Besides this isn't about money
It is about explaining speed in an easier to understand way.
Most people connect to the internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your ISP can be anyone from the friendly local computer store, your phone company, your cable company etc.
If you have a "Dial-up" connection it is Probably over a 56K modem. Your 56K modem can handle 56,000 Bits Per Second (bps). Although the speed is actually limited to 53,000 bps. Prices range from $7.50/Mo to about $30.00/Mo.
(about 1,000 bps equals 1
"K")
If you are using your local computer shop, they are probably hooking you onto a T-1 line. The T-1 line Costs them between $400 and $950 a Month and can handle 1.544 Mbps.
Mbps is Mega Bites Per Second.
(about 1,000 "K" equals
1 "M")
If you are using a DSL line their speed varies from 10 Kpbs. to 7.4 Mbps. (Although the Phone Co. limits it to 680 Kbps). Prices vary greatly with speed and other optional services, Cost are between $25.00/Mo. and $100.00/Mo. It is because of these speeds, and the falling costs that people are moving to the faster connections. Downloads come faster, games are played without delay. etc. DSL Prices Here
